The typical method to remove ear wax at GP practices is using the Syringing method. However, many GP practices have stopped offering ear syringing due to the contraindications involved. There are several contraindications including:

  • Likelihood of the perforation of the Ear Drum.
  • Lack of precision as no view of the ear canal during procedure.
  • Water being used can more likely result in ear infections.
  • Cannot be performed on anyone with perforations, mastoid cavities or foreign bodies in the ear.

What is Microsuction?

Ear wax removal (microsuction) is a safe procedure where wax is removed from the ear under a microscope. The microscope is used to visualise the wax whilst it is being removed with a gentle suction machine with low pressure and a sterile probe.

The method we use on our clients is Microsuction as it is the “Gold Standard” for the removal of ear wax. This is the same method used by Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists at hospitals and private clinics. There are several reasons Microsuction is the preferred method of treatment.

  • There is a clear view of the ear canal to ensure optimal precision, safety, and effectivity of the wax removal process.
  • No water involved minimises chances of developing an ear infection. Anyone with perforations, mastoid cavities or foreign bodies can be treated.
  • Pain-free and effective treatment of wax
  • Little to no risk of damage to the ear
  • Quick procedure – Effective results can be achieved within 30 minutes for both ears.

Microsuction Vs Ear syringing?

Microsuction is a much quicker, safer and comfortable experience for the patient unlike ear syringing which requires water to flush out the wax. Microsuction is a ‘dry’ procedure reducing the risk of infection as water is not flushed into the ear canal. Unlike ear syringing Microsuction can be performed on people with longstanding dry perforated ear drums.

What happens during the appointment?

  • Case history/consent form completed
  • Video otoscopy to visualise the wax
  • Ear wax is safely removed by microsuction
  • Video otoscopy is repeated to examine the ear canal and ear drum to ensure a complete removal of wax
