However, wax becomes an issue when there is an excessive build up in the ear canal. Excessive wax can cause the following symptoms:
- Itchy ears
- Earache
- Blocked ears
- Dizziness
- Tinnitus
- Hearing loss
- Feedback from hearing aids
What is ear wax?
Cerumen (ear wax) is a vital component of your body’s protection and is made up of 3 main substances: keratin (dead skin cells), cerumen (a wax like substance) and sebum (an oily secretion from the sebaceous glands). Earwax plays a key role in protecting the lining of the ear canals from any damage, by aiding the migration of bacteria and dirt out of the canal. It also acts as a lubrication for the canal.
